What is FaMED? Tasks, timing and preparation

FaMED assesses professional medical German communication. Medical knowledge is not separately assessed. Preparation should focus on understanding the assignment and communicating clearly.

Three stations, five tasks

1. Patient communication: a medical history and an informed-consent conversation.
2. Professional communication: two separate patient presentations.
3. Writing: the anamnesis section based on a patient video.

Each oral station has a 23-minute block including reading. The current practice test allows at most 11 minutes for each oral situation. The written task allows 22 minutes including the video. These timings were checked against provider material on 18 October 2026.

How to prepare

Use complete sentences in writing and practise reporting patient information appropriately. OPQRST, SAMPLER and SBAR can support practice; they are not mandatory official marking schemes. A full SOAP note or discharge letter is not the written assignment.

Each of the three stations requires at least 60%; a stronger station does not compensate for a weaker one. Check the provider's current information for your booking.
